Ad esempio se sto suonando l&#8217;accordo di DO maggiore formato dalle note DO &#8211; MI &#8211; SOL \u00a0come parte dell&#8217;armonia di un determinato passaggio e non intendo modificarne la funzione sostituendolo o alterandolo (le sostituzioni armoniche sono un&#8217;altro argomento da conoscere) posso comunque &#8220;circondare&#8221; le note principali degli accordi con note estranee all&#8217;accordo utilizzando note della scala, cromatismi, o entrambe le cose). La sonorit\u00e0 dell&#8217;accordo resta nella sua struttura fondamentale inalterata ma il fraseggio si arricchisce della possibilit\u00e0 di movimenti ritmici piu&#8217; complessi, di una fluidit\u00e0 strumentale maggiore o anche della sonorit\u00e0 derivante da determinati intervalli. Studiare le approach notes conduce ad una padronanza strumentale maggiore ed all&#8217;ampliamento delle possibilit\u00e0 melodiche all&#8217;interno di un accordo. L&#8217;argomento &#8220;approach notes&#8221; pu\u00f2 essere considerato naturale prosecuzione di quanto detto nell&#8217;articolo sulle scale bop.
